mins.) by Phil. Society for Orphan Disorders

disorders are "orphaned" by society.
They suffer from social abandonment
because of lack of existing network of
support to aid them. Medical help is

country's health priority.

BUNKER 0: SUMIRIB PLUS, Documentary
(2006, 10 minutes) by Jan Philippe V.
Carpio (Iloilo)

The film shows a series of moments
involving the people of Sitio Sumirib,
Barangay La Paz in the municipality of
Nueva Valencia, province of Guimaras,
one of the areas most affected by the
massive oil spill from the sunken tanker
Solar 1 chartered by the Petron oil
corporation. The film focuses more on
their thoughts and feelings regarding
this man-made ecological disaster, and
the actions they are taking to somehow
cope with very difficult times ahead.
Bunker 0: Sumirib Plus is the first in a
series of films concerning the Guimaras
Oil Spill disaster.

Screened as part of the Independent
Filmmaker Cooperative's "Guimaras: Short
films from the Oil Spill" Festival,
November 2006

LIFE PROJECTIONS (2006, 4 mins.) by
Raya Martin

"A video wants to be a film, as the
world's second biggest oil spill just
happened in the heart of the filmmaker.
A large group of Filipino filmmakers
responded with a short film to a
disastrous oil spill in their island
nation. This talented filmmaker
instinctively avoided a political
pamphlet and went straight for the
emotional core of the matter. He found
that core in his heart, as he writes
himself." -Gertjan Zuillhof,
International Film Festival Rotterdam

YOUTH/STUDENT/THESIS WORKS

PANAKOBA (Child Scarer) (2007, 15mins.)
by Michael Allan S. Canlas (Colegio de
San Juan de Letran)

The film revolves around Ramwen, a
specialist in scaring children and known
to be the best in the business.
Everything goes well until an Indian
Urban Legend brings back his own
childhood fears.

This is the first film that deals with
the "Panakoba" or "Panakot Bata" -- the
Filipino version of the Boogeyman. A
child rearing practice in the
Philippines, kids are made to follow
orders thru the use of imaginary
characters. Given the prevalence of
boogeyman tales across cultures, it may
have an evolutionary origin as a
mechanism for protecting young children
from becoming vulnerable to predators by
wandering away at night. Boogeyman may
be said to target a specific mischief –
for instance, a boogeyman that
persecutes children who suck their
thumbs – or just general misbehavior

ESTROPA, Documentary (2007) by Michael
Galang and Sheryl Rose Andes (UP Film
Institute)
This documentary on teenage rappers
residing in Tondo focuses on how these
individuals articulate their existence,
environment and sentiments through the
literature that they create. Though
these rap songs are considered informal,
unacademic and dismissed as just "pop
culture", these Tondo rappers are
nevertheless engaged in the producing
of historical texts about life in the
slums, gang wars, love and their own
personal lives that of which
"bourgeois-like" texts cannot give
justice to.

LONG LIVE PHILIPPINE CINEMA! [2007, 6
mins] by Raya Martin

Mother Lily is a Filipino Chinese
producer who monopolizes the local film
industry. And the only way to keep
Philippine Cinema alive is to kill her.
"Yes, a cinema to be proud of, yet the
cheer is full of irony. The history of
Filipino film isn't treated with so much
respect?. A burlesque, harsh satire
about the mistress of Philippine film
production, the Chinese-Filipino
producer Mother Lily. She is hated and
feared, but nobody can get round her.
Fortunately this young film maker has
thought up an adequate solution to keep
Philippine cinema alive. Mother Lily is
not a metaphorical invention. She really
exists - for now." -Gertjan Zuillhof,
International Film Festival Rotterdam.
